Notes
from SLSIA Annual Meeting
Wednesday, January 11th about 80 members of the Association met
at Firefighters/Postal Club. The official minutes of this meeting
will be made available on our web site www.lakespringfield.org.
I will offer a few highlights here.
A
Market Based Home Sales Report was prepared by Association
Member Beckey Hendricks. Copies of the report were available at
the meeting and the report will be made available to all on our
web site www.lakespringfield.org.
SLSIA
contributed $500.00 to SUSART, $250.00 to the Illinois Land of
Lincoln Power Squadron, and $250.00 to Lincoln Memorial Gardens.
These organizations are not tax supported and rely on contributions
to finance programs very beneficial to Lake Springfield.
There
were several invited guests that furthered the civic, educational,
and social interest of our Association. Mayor Mike Houston addressed
the assemblage communicating the big ideas of people
that led to the building of Lake Springfield, the largest municipally
owned lake in Illinois at 4,200 acres. The Mayor stressed that
those big ideas are being protected and preserved
by the professional management of City, Water, Light and Power.
Eric Hobie, CWLP Electrical Department Director, was on hand to
answer specific questions regarding the departments review
of the ordinance sponsored by Alderman Frank Edwards amending
the City Code to include all 735 leaseholders to be subject to
Building and Zoning. Alderman Edwards and Eric explained what
the amendment would do and that to better implement variance procedures
CWLP was reviewing the ordinance and would have a complete policy
in place within several weeks.
Steve
Frank, CWLP environmental/runoff, updated the Association regarding
the completed projects around the lake in 2011. Much has been
accomplished this year that will serve our 600,000 some annual
recreational visitors to the lake, eight lake area parks, Henson
Robinson Zoo, and Lincoln Memorial Gardens. The new boat launch
in Center Park is complete, and striping will be painted this
spring. Restoration to Lindsay Bridge was completed on budget
and on time. This successful project was due to a high degree
of cooperation between CWLP, and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Not enough can be said regarding the diligence of Cummins Engineering
and Halverson Construction in getting this job done. Mike Cummins,
a lake resident, was in attendance at this meeting. Steve was
able to help answer specific questions regarding lake services,
roadway resurfacing, snow removal, etc.
New
lake area police officer Andy Zander talked to members concerns
about police presence around the lake. Andy has a lot of area
to cover from east of the lake to Veterans, and from South Grand
to the southern boundaries of the city. Lake Patrol officer John
Shea is currently serving on the 2cnd shift, but will return to
the lake this spring/summer.
Darrin
Burnett Area Director Special Olympics invited members of the
Association to TAKE THE PLUNGE, March 3, 2012 noon at Lake Springfield
K of C 4179. Proceeds from this event benefit Special Olympics
Illinois. Register at www.plungeillinois.com,
or contact Darrin 217-544-3023 / Fax: 217-544-3545 / dburnett@soill.org.
Yes, the water is cold. Plungers go in the water for about thirty
seconds. Firefighters are in the water in wet suits for the entire
event, real heroes that deserve a high five out in four feet of
water. For $75.00 you receive a hooded sweatshirt, a bowl of chili,
and a beer. Get a team together for a bone chilling, heart warming
experience.
Scott
Beckerman, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Ray Marshala Illinois
Department Natural Resources Waterfowl Biologist gave a power
point presentation on nuisance wildlife geese and beaver. There
are techniques available to help control problems locally, but
few solutions to control populations for the long term. Some options
are highly controversial. Hunting geese on the lake is prohibited,
but hunting as close to the lake as permissible will help control
the native population. Tall grass along the shoreline will deter
geese from entering your yard. A mesh comprised of fishing line
just off shore is another effective restriction; this mesh would
require maintenance and attention. Monofilament line in the water
poses another problem; it destroys the seal on boat lower units.
The
solution for our expanding beaver population is inherently controversial.
Trapping is the only effective control of Illinois largest
rodent. Wire mesh around trees and desirable landscaping will
prevent the beaver from damaging your plants. Install it from
the ground up at least four feet. Of all the birds, mammals, and
reptiles native to Illinois, most of them can be found around
Lake Springfield. Go to the University of Illinois Extension web
site, Living With Wildlife in Illinois http://web.extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/
for more information. With 735 leaseholders there will be disagreement
between man and nature.
Lake
resident John Watt from Hazel Dell Lane addressed the meeting
with concerns about residents using the common areas around the
lake for personal uses; disposal of yard waste, storing fire wood,
and developing unapproved trails. John would like to see the Board
form a green space committee to protect and preserve
the marginal lands from such encroachments. This matter will be
considered at the February Quarterly Board Meeting to determine
if there is an appropriate stewardship role for SLSIA.
Possibly,
SLSIA can partner with Friends of Sangamon Valley under the guidance
of CWLP to initiate some green space projects, such as removal
of invasive species to help make the marginal lands more attractive
to residents and the general public?
We
elected some new Board Members. John Finnel, Hawthorne Lane, and
Valorie Nestor, Weinold Lane have been elected to fill vacated
Board seats expiring in 2013. Cinda Shien-Kincade and Ann Tucker
resigned their seats. The Association thanks Cinda and Ann for
their service, and welcomes John and Valorie. Existing Board Members
whose terms expire in 2012 Kim Curry, Fariview Lane, Teri Holland,
Forest Ridge, Vicki McGuar, Oak Lane, Peter Murphy, Linden Lane,
Larry Michaud, Bay Ridge, Pam Tiskos, Yacht Club Lane, and Diane
Urbankas, Cottage Grove were reelected to seats that expire in
2015. Dawn Keiser, N. Cotton Hill Rd., and Beckey Hendricks, Linden
Lane were elected to fill seats vacated by Garrett Deakin and
Jeff Schlindwein that expire in 2015. The Association thanks Garrett
and Jeff for their service, and welcomes Dawn and Becky. We have
a full Board of twenty five members.
The
Board will elect executives; President, Vice President, Treasurer,
and Recording Secretary at the February 1, 2012 Quarterly Board
Meeting tentatively scheduled for 6:00 pm at the Aqua Club. I
will not be able to attend this meeting and will not serve on
the Executive Committee in 2012.
The
Woods Behind the School
This is the title of an article in the summer 2011 Friends of
Sangamon Valley Newsletter written by President Vern LaGesse.
The entire newsletter is available at www.fosv.org/
In late April, the Friends created a small trail through CWLPs
Gleenwood Woods. The first week of May every fourth grader (all
350 of them) in the Chatham School District was treated to a guided
tour with leaders from Lincoln Memorial Gardens, Adams Wildlife
Sanctuary, the Friends and some of the graduates from the Master
Naturalist Program with the Illinois Extension Service. Check
out Chris Youngs State Journal Register video of the tour
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UvGFG7mNHY=
The
Friends host restoration days, stewardship and trail maintenance,
throughout the year in the woods behind the schools. Glenwood
Intermediate and Middle Schools (5th through 8th grade) is creating
an Ecology Club that possibly will help with the restoration project.
The next scheduled work day is February 2, 2012 at 3:00 pm. Contact
Vern at 525-1410 for more information.

Lake
Water Level
On January 9th, 2012 the lake level was 557.82, in the previous
year the level was 559.59, and the monthly Average is 558.03.
Last month the level was 557.18. The lake level is rising
due to rainfall sufficient for CWLP to pump from Horse Creek.
If you are storing watercraft at your dock, make sure the lift
is high enough to accommodate an increase in the lake level. An
extra precaution would be to tether your boat.
