2008 Sherel Nutt Memorial Scholarships Will Be $750

A motion was made by John Aiello, seconded and unanimously adopted by the board to increase next year's scholarships to $750.  We had 30 strong scholarship applicants this year and the winners just showed how good, talented & motivated our young people are coming out of our local high schools.  I congratulate our two winners and our board for supporting our youth!

LEASE RELIEF

Homeowners will have a small window of opportunity - from October 9, 2007 until December 31, 2007, to sign a new lease based upon the 2005 tax year assessment fact or after December 31, 2007, lake leases will be based upon the current tax bill.

2008 Scholarship Winners
- Hannah Giacomini & Kelly Short

Garrett Deakin, President of the Lake Homeowner’s Association, said he was very pleased to announce the 2008 Sherel Nutt Memorial Scholarship award winners – Hannah Giacomini and Kelly Short of Springfield. They will both receive $750 for use towards their college expenses.

Hannah Giacomini is the daughter of Patrick and Debbie Giacomini. They live at 3616 Edinborough Court, Springfield. She will graduate from Sacred Heart-Griffin High School this month and attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall.

Kelly Short is the daughter of John and Mary Short who live at 85 Island Bay Lane. She will graduate this month from Glenwood High School and attend Bradley University in Peoria this fall.

Deakin said, “Our scholarship is named after a man who lived on Lake Springfield for over 40 years, volunteered his services and believed in the future of our youth. Sherel would be proud of these two high school students. Both Hannah and Kelly are wonderful examples of highly motivated high school seniors who are academically strong, participate extensively in school activities and have given back to our community through volunteer efforts.”

Hannah Giacomini holds a 3.88 GPA, National Honor Society member, Swim Team, Academic All Conference, Spring Musical 4 years, Friends in Resistance Education 4 years & President, Jazz Band 4 years, Year Book Portraits Editor, Peer Counseling and Freshman Orientation 3 years. Hannah has been active with UCP’s Saddle-Up Program, ILCAAP, a state-wide prevention organization that performs skits to show good examples to teens to prevent drug & alcohol abuse plus works as a life guard and swim instructor 40 hours a week.

Kelly Short has a weighted GPA of 4.5, Varsity Soccer 4 years, Cross Country team 4 years, Lunch Buddies 4 years and tutors 3rd graders. She has traveled on a Side By Side Habitat for Humanity trip and works at Panera Bread.

The Lake Shore Improvement Association's scholarships were open to all high school seniors attending the 9 public or private schools in the Chatham, Rochester or Springfield School Districts (schools that border Lake Springfield). The only requirement was that students must continue their education this fall – be it a public or private community college, 4 year college or university. The award is very flexible and can be used to help cover the cost of tuition, room and board, books or travel expenses.

The application required each senior to submit a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, list of extracurricular activities/community service and write a 500 word essay on "What Lake Springfield has meant to you."

The Association set up a Scholarship Committee to evaluate the applications. "Competition was of the highest caliber, and we have proof that the quality of students graduating from our public and private high schools in Springfield, Chatham and Rochester is excellent," said Deakin.
